I am Bessie Schneiderman's (now Rosenbloom)daughter and I will always remember my times in Cape Breton with my Aunt Tootsie and Uncle Ike (Faye and Ike David) and Nettie Simon and Rhea, Lisa, and the gang. Last year I had the pleasure of once again seeing the inside of the Sons of Israel Synagogue and meeting some of the members of the Jewish community in Glace Bay (I have some really good photographs, if anyone is interested). My mother, Bess, just had the time of her life at the reunion in 2001 and I wish I had been there with her.
As an aside, there is a wonderful book published by Robin McGrath entitled "Salt Fish and Shmattes, A History of the Jews in Newfoundland and Labrador from 1770". True to form, I married a Newfoundlander almost 20 years ago and we go "home" every December and July / August. It is my dream to one day retire to either Newfoundland or Cape Breton, despite having grown up in Montreal and now living and working in Toronto. You might want to consider linking this page to the Jewish Museum in St. John, N.B. and they may do the same for you. Documenting the Jewish communities in the Atlantic Provinces is an important part of preserving the cultural heritage of the region.
It was great to seee picture of my former dentist, Dr. Philip Simon. I remember when an exhibit of Jewish history in the region was mounted at the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History. It was Dr. Simon who narrated the exhibit, and interestingly enough many of the artifacts in the exhibit came from Glace Bay. I have often wondered if there were any records kept of that display. The panels had motion sensors, and when you walked up to them Philip Simon's voice suddenly surrounded you...a lot like being in his dental chair as a child. A great site. I hope it stays on the net. |

| Comments: | Congratulations on your 100th Anniversary. My heart is there with you. I have been researching the family of my Great Uncle Isaac Ross 1893-1934. He was b. in Brooklyn, NY or Newark, NJ. His parents, Sam and Etta (nee Gerber) Ross moved to St. John, NB in 1900, then to Shediac, NB in 1901 and on to Truro, NS where they lived on Forrester St.
He had two older sisters, Irene and Sadie, both born in Dorbyan, Lithuania. Neither of them ever knew that. My grandmother was Sadie, who was disowned as a teenager and secretly sent by her mother from Truro to Halifax to New York and then on to NJ to her Uncle Hyman. His wife refused her, so she changed her name to Christine Veronica Ross, said she was Scot-Irish and married a man studying for the Baptist ministry. When telling us of her life in Canada, she called her father Norman and her brother Ike became Frank. Her sister Tillie became Lillian. Her other brothers were Charles, Louis and Simon. A 1977 trip to these towns was a dead end because we had the wrong names. Benjamin Russ couldn't even figure it out. They were friends and neighbors of Louis B. Mayer in 1900 and he was going to contact the Mayer family. Mr. Russ became ill and I lost contact with him. My mother and I were pretty sure my grandmother was Jewish and wanted to know more. Eventually I located a person unknown to us, but was a name in my grandmother's papers. Calling information repeatedly in Los Angeles to get a number for that person led me to our Jewish family and heritage. I was able to find my Great Aunt Tillie and visited her. From there I have been locating family members and learning about my Litvak heritage from them and from some Cape Breton folks who have been very kind with email attachments of photos of the headstones, an obituary and funeral notice of Uncle Ike's death in Aug of 1934. I'm learning about the Hamburg family also. One of your congregation and John Touchings sent me historical information on aspects of my family and Jewish traditions and practices, as well as a history of the four Jewish settlements in Cape Breton. Some day I hope to be able to walk well enough to come to Cape Breton and Glace Bay in particular. Suffice it to say I find Uncle Ike's grandsons in Montreal are also highly interested now that they have had this information passed on to them and you may be hearing from or seeing them visit at some point. They are the sons of Marcia Ross Pomerantz. Frances Ross is single and alert, but has a hearing problem. Ike has one other dau. living in Ontario...Celia Mendelson. Her son, Irwin, is an eye doctor in Halifax; I just spoke with him yesterday. I've lost my address for sending a gift for the perpetual care of The Hebrew Cemetery. If you would be so kind as to send it again. Thank you for this wonderful site as it lets me experience a bit of what would have been my life. | Comments: | I was sorry to hear about the decline in the Jewish population of Glace Bay, I was born in Glace Bay and like many of the population could not find suitable work in the area. I joined the Air Force in 1954 and served for almost 37 years. I served in the Sinai Desert (now part of Egypt) as a peacekeeper. Prior to going to the middle east we had to learn the history and customs of both Isreal and Egypt, which I enjoyed very much. Now when I read the bible I can picture all the places. Hello all, When I first moved to Canada, my first stop was Cape Breton Island. Shortly after, I moved to Halifax and got involved in the development of the AJC, working with Shaul Landa, Ben Prossin, Marty Chernin, Peter Stone, "The Duke", Frank and Ralph Medjuk and a host of other community leaders. I have spent the past 28 years working as a Jewish Communal professional in Canada. The single most important factor in my career decision was the warmth, caring and interest expressed to me by the Atlantic Jewish Community... and especially by those wonderful people in Cape Breton. I often think of those experiences and only wish they could be replicated elsewhere. Truth is, the Atlantic Jewish Community is really "one of a kind". I will always remember your kindness and generosity to me. Like many other "Capers" in Ontario, I will spend many hours wishing I could someday find my way back home. The Jewish community of Glace Bay was so interwoven in all our lives it is sad to see the community so diminished. My Granmother and Uncles would take my cousins and I to services on Saturday. We would spend our summers in Glace Bay until we were about 8 years of age. By the way I am the son of Lena Magonet. | Comments: | A tribute to Lt. Col. Joseph Mirkin on his 90th birthday. I want to thank the organizing committee for making possible a wonderful, memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. With the expense of two kids in college, we almost did not come. I am so thankful for the opportunity to share with my father, my two daughters Tamara and Jessica, and my husband Robert, our first visit to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. My son David was working, and was unable to attend. Duncan was where the family home of Abraham Mirkin and Lottie Shandling Mirkin and their Corner Country Store once stood. We saw one of my Dad's neighbors who recently retired on the plot of land. We saw the ocean where my Dad first learned to swim, after a log slid away from him. We saw the old school house and Post Office. We saw the gravesites of my paternal great-grandmother Mirkin, Great Aunt Rebecca Mirkin Long, grandfather Abraham Mirkin. I was so glad to visit the Eins and the Longs and the family at Miro Lake, many of whom I've never met. I saw Toby and Isaac Ein, Robert, David, and Arnie Ein, and families, cousins Lois and Anita and families, and my cousin Bruce and his family. I shall always remember the lovely day spent at Toby and Isaac Ein's on Mira: my daughters' boat ride, manned by Arnie, and the Shabbat family dinner. As performers, my family truly enjoyed the gala, and for a return for a possible reunion would love to participate. We loved being in the synagogue and visiting the cemetary in which many of our relatives were buried. I truly enjoyed meeting Morrison Powell, photographer, Julie Zatzman, author of the book on Nova Scotia, Joel Kranz, filmmaking student, Shirley Chernin and Betty Shore with whom I kept in touch. We enjoyed the Cabot Trail, where we hiked 4 miles and drove 10 hours around the trail in one day. Those were the carefree days which we shall always remember. Had my mom still been alive, my father and mother would have retired in Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, my mom passed away 10-1/2 years ago and my father never realized his dream of retiring in Nova Scotia. My dad's sister Betty Mirkin, and Dad are truly the greatest animal and nature lovers. Now I understand why. Their yearning for their homeland, especially the ocean, has been our legacy. Not only is the nature magnificent and untouched, but also the people are so generous, warm, loving, and gracious. I now sincerely appreciate my identity and roots. We now long to return as soon as possible. Thank you Toby for sharing insights about my grandfather. Thank you, Anita, for making Miro come alive through your insights. Thank you Dad, for sharing and passing on such a wonderful legacy. We look forward to returning in a year to possibly celebrate a preshow on the documentary. Happy 90th birthday, Dad. |

I can't tell you how wonderful it was to see my dear cousin Toby Ein and family. Even though I left in 1924 I still feel that Cape Breton is home. My experience of attending the wonderful 100th celebration of the Sons of Israel Congregation will remain in my fondest memory as long as I live. There was no Talmud Torah when I left with my family at age 13 in 1924. I stayed in Sterling with the Homberg family to study for my Bar Mitzvah, as I lived in #6 (Duncan) which was too far away to study with the rabbi. | Comments: | We came to Cape Breton Island for the first time last summer, looking for beaches, sea kayaking, hiking and Celtic fiddle music. Knowing nothing of the former Jewish presence in the cities, we did not seek it out. A magazine article in the fall discussing the Reunion, alerted me to a side of the island I did not know existed.
I'm sorry that I missed it, but since the National Park, music and water were wonderful. We probably will be back. |

This journey back to Glace Bay was an exceptional opportunity to reconnect with many relatives I know and the discovery of even more I had not met before. Imagine meeting a 'drop in' couple who were taking a little bicycle ride around the Cabot Trail - and who happened to be related! It was all great fun - especially the day on the Myra. For those interested in genealogy, I want to make special mention of the extremely helpful staff at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia in Halifax. They seemed to become as obsessed as my wife, Judy, and I in tracking down the early history of my grandfather, Soloman Cohen. After two days of spinning microfilm, we discovered his purchase of Glace Bay property in 1912. In Glace Bay, we were introduced to Ruth Goldbloom, who had much to do with establishing Pier 21 as a museum and archive. We took the time to visit the place where Judy, as a Holocaust survivor, arrived in 1948. Thanks to all concerned. You did a super job. Can't wait til the next Centennial! Sidney and Judy Cohen. |

The reunion was absolutely more than I expected. It was so wonderful to go back home and see so many people I grew up with and to recall old memories. My family lived in Dominion and only went to Glace Bay for Shabbot and holidays. We stayed with the Wm. Chernin family..our Uncle Willlie & Aunt Minnie, so we were always directly across the street from the Talmud Torah and Schul.What wonderful memories the trip evoked.My husband Eugene met so many of his cousins he had never met before. His two aunts were the original Cohen women whose husbands (who were brothers) used to have the Jewish butcher shop.If they were alive today they would be well over 100 hr. old. Because of the wonderful people who had the idea to have the reunion, so many people were able to connect or reconnect to family they had not seen in over 50 years.Congratulations to Shirley Chernin (who was married to one of my cousins) and her committee for doing such an outstanding job. Because of you..so many people were soooo happy. The feeling of warmth and excitement and happiness was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Our hats are off to Shirley Chernin, Sylvia Allen, Raymond Goldman and the rest of the committee. We are still riding on a high. On our return Anita Zuckerman (my youngest sister)and I drove into Montreal to have lunch with the late Sherry Dubinsky from Dominion daughters ( to tell them all about the reunion and to fill them in on forgotten details of their late mother. It helped put a lot of things in prespective for them. We would never have even known how to reach them except for the marvelous computer page that gave us so many email addresses of former Capers. Seeing so many old friends brought back so many wonderful memories. Visiting the cemetery which is one of the best kept and arranged cemeteries that I have ever visited seemed to fill a void in our lives. We have often spoken of returning to Glace Bay, I had done so many years ago but Anita never had and this wonderful reunion pushed us into doing what we had long wanted to do and kept putting off. Shirley Chernin and her committee need to know what an incredible job they did down to every last detail. My sister and I and so many others I talked to were amazed. My only regret is that I didn't express my gratitude enough in person to Shirley and the others. We will never forget
strolling the streets of Glace Bay, visiting with so many from the past, talking with those who we had heard of (thru my father Archie and mother, Mae) but hadn't known. And of course being in shul and recognizing that this was the place where my father spent so much time because it was so important to him. The old photos that my cousin Raymond put together were great-what memories! And the book that Julie Zatzman produced couldn't have been appreciated any more. It actually answered some Glace Bay questions that I wasn't sure of before. I could go on but I'll stop here. Reading the notes brought back many fond memories of growing up in the Sterling, in the midst of a Jewish Community. I remember the rabbi visiting the Shores on Ingraham Lane. I first thought he was one of the Smith's brothers on the box of Smith's cough drops. The next day Mrs. Shore would be busy plucking chickens but never too busy to stop to day hello and ask how things were going. I can still see Morris chewing on his cigar. I am sure that cigar would last all day if not two or more. My next stop would be to visit Mrs. Sable who would have me run some errands for her. She would have me go to Blackman's Store to get the special meat for supper. This would give me an opportunity to visit Mrs. Blackman and her sons, Joe and Alex. I remember Harry, Sally and Hymie Sable. A day would not go by without visiting Sam and Ruth Schachter. Who can forget their famous milkshake? I went to school with Sandra and know Judy as well. I remember; the Sunday afternoon the Chernin's store burnt, visiting old Mr. Ein and doing chores for him, play in the Chernin and Shore hay barns, taking the residue chemical from Harry Sables dry cleaning and lighting it on the ground. Who could forget Sammy and Daniel Mendelson, or Toby and Isaac Ein? As a teenage I moved in with my grand parents behind Shores wholesale on McKeen Street. I would drop in and visit with Archie/Saul Shore, The Zilberts , the Gondons and my good friend Nat Gaum.
I would also like to say hello to my former dentist Dr. Philip Simon, a fellow teacher Fanny Cohen, my friend Dora Goldman and her husband, Raymond, and conversationalist Ellie Marshall. Again I would like to thank the community for all their hard work and effort in putting the reunion together. A special thank you to two very special people, Betty and Gerry Shore. I hope your reunion is a delight and that there will be much enjoyment and fond memories. I know that the Jewish community has enriched my life and that I am a better person for having known your families. I am very sorry to not be there for the reunion, but I am visiting in California with my mother, Rachel Benjamin Tilem, who was born in Glace Bay in 1907. Her message follows. Any messages to us from you will be very welcome. We have a Benjamin-Wasserman family tree as well. ---------------- Rachel Benjamin Tilem I was born in Glace Bay on February 10, 1907. My mother's name was Dena Wasserman Benjamin, and my father's name was Morris Benjamin. I am 94 years old. I live in Berkeley, California near my younger daughter, Harriet Hanauer. My father was the first official president of the synagogue in Glace Bay, and I have a can which was presented to him in 1907 by the synagogue. He had the only furniture store in Glace Bay, and our home was at 39 Victoria Street (since burned down.) His picture was also in the hospital as one of the founders. In 1915, he and his family of eight children and possibly two other men from Glace Bay or Sydney moved to the State of Washington in the U.S. (Republic, WA) They didn't stay long, and eventually settled in Montreal. Goldman, was at a funeral service for my brother at St. Anne's, Glace Bay, on Jul 24th and I singled him out of the congregation, pointing out that Raymond had a tree planted in Israel in mr brother's name. That was during my eulogy. I also gave Sons of Israel Synagogue a free plug for your 100th and bade you shalom and l'chaim. My daughter converted to Judaism and is married to an Ottawa lawyer, Steve Gaon. Steve tells me that Gaon is the only proper name mentioned in the Bible. I am leaving now - Sunday - 10.20 a.m. - for a kiddush with a gang of Jewish businessman, doctors and lawyers. They call me their token Gentile. The name of the group is the Star of David Old Boys Club. We pay $5.00 each for coffee, poppyseed roll and some of the boys bring lox, bagels, pickled herring. The owner of the restaurant is one of us and allows us to do anything we want. Peter Newman, the author, and I are the only honorary members. I took Ellie Marshall to one session but Raymond Goldman is never here long enough for me to take him. L'chaim. |

The original Shul in Whitney Pier was almost a carbon copy of the Glace Bay Shul (Must have used the same plans twice !) so I am really looking forward to once again walking throgh the doors of the Galce Bay shul which is so similar to the Shul I grew up in at Whitney Pier - and of course seeing so many friends whom I've haven't seen in years. Every summer I would return to visit my parents, and after marrying would spend vacations there with my husband and two daughters. My parents always looked forward to our visits every summer, and we enjoyed visiting and seeing everyone. website. As I was checking out the centennial celebrations for Glace Bay I went to this site. It brought back so many fond memories I was overwhelmed. I am the daughter of the late Mark Gardiner and grew up in the Sterling area. All of my childhood memories flahed before me. Going to Schacter's store for a milkshake, picking up my father's drycleaning at Sable's, and going to Mendelson's for groceries for my mother. There was always a friendly chat with the Blackman's. | Comments: | With less than a month 'til the big day, it has taken me this long to check in and "have a look" (as my great Aunt Rachel Boniuk would say) at the wonderful comments that have sprung from this extraordinary occasion to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Glace Bay Congregation Sons of Israel.
"Now why has it taken me so long?" I asked myself. And the only response that made any sense to me is that although I moved away 28 years ago, Glace Bay remains an integral part of who I am today. I am never without a connection to the town and especially the Jewish Community which in more ways than I can say shaped my particular outlook on life and the world around me. Wherever I have lived, I find something that reminds me of Glace Bay whether it is a personality or a just whiff that takes me back in time. And I remember everything "as if" it all happened yesterday. I remember those early years at the Talmud Torah. We had one of the largest classes with the core group being made up of Sybil Shore, Judith Medjuck, Nina and Elaine Lipshutz, Norman Rosenblum, Alan Simon, Rhea and Lisa Simon, Elaine Cohen. I hope I haven't missed anyone. And every day of the week except Friday and Saturday, of course, we grew up together at Cheder. We had Rabbi and Morah Mykoff, Rabbi Levin, Rabbi Rosenberg and probably one or two more in between. Norman and I would walk together as early as Grade 2 from South Street School -- through the downtown core. It never ocurred to us that we were anything but safe. Lots of games, jokes and tricks we played on each other over those formative years. And Aunt Shirley, do you remember the current affairs classes you would lead for the post Bar Mitzvah students? We may have enjoyed that most of all. And every Saturday whether your family was religious or not, we went to Shul. In the early years we "girls" were upstairs until we made so much noise that we had to come downstairs so they could keep an eye on us. Except for the holidays, there were very few women and so we were really in the hands of the "Sons of Israel". For many of those years, the presidents were Saul Shore and Philip Simon between their tutelage and the influence of Hymie Boniuk who would sometimes follow along with me, I really grew to enjoy this time in shul, the Sabbath and all the holidays. I found great comfort just seeing the same "old" faces every week singing the same old melodies (as often as not off key). The holidays were very special as the shul would be filled with college students returning and visitors 'from away'. Even now memories of just sitting beside my own Grandmother, Razel (Rose) Chernin during a Rosh Hashana or a Yom Kippor service catapults me back to very happy times. And on Sundays we had Young Judea. Bennie Prossin, Nina and Arthur Zilbert and later, Sharon Shore and Sharon Simon somehow stand out for me here as some of the leaders. There could be 50 kids running all around the Talmud Torah on a Scavenger Hunt or singing songs and dancing. And our turns came as we returned from Camp Kadimah or Biluim pumped up to keep our community spirit alive. And of course, the famous Channucha and Purim concerts and plays. And the carnivals where we all dressed up like Kings and Queens or Mordechai and Haman. One year because we didn't have enough boys in our class I got to play Mordechai. In those days it caused a bit of a stir but practicality won out. Although the "Sons of Israel" had their way in Shul, it seemed like the Ladies Auxilary and the Glace Bay Chapter of Haddasah (I think they were all the same women) kept everything else alive. Between the Shores, the Simons, the Chernins, the Zilberts and the Cohens you could be sure of a minyan in Glace Bay and the best latkes and cakes at any luncheon or dinner. No one in Glace Bay was too important or too busy not to pitch in. Or so it seemed to me. And speaking of "pitch", that reminds me of "pinch". As a kid you were sure to get your cheeks pinched. Our neighbour Dora Goldman never missed a function and I could always be assured that she would pinch my cheeks and tell me how much I looked like my mother. Or was it my father? But if the truth be known, I welcomed this recognition. I could count on it somehow and everyone felt just a little familar to me as I was to them. I was part of something. Not something grand or exclusive. Far from that. But something important all the same. Of course, each time I visit I bring my collection of stones from the shore to the cemetary and pay my respects - not only to my own mother and father (Sandra and Myer) and my grandparents whom I continue to miss to this day but the many other 'familiar' names that have accompanied me over the years - and took the time to watch me grow, provide a glass of milk and cookies along the way and pinch my cheek. And to end on this note, a little story: Several years ago, I was home for my the 25th High School Reunion and I brought my son, Max who was 6 years old at the time. We were staying with Aunt Shirley and Uncle Joey and I took him to different sites including the cemetary. Of course, I pointed out a number of people as I walked along placing my stones. On the way out of town, I told Max we were going to drop in on cousin, Harold Chernin. Max then asked me, "Is he alive or dead." Harold - who was and is quite alive and well - got a big kick out of this. But there are many who will be missed. And especially Uncle Joey, who after all was responsible for bringing Aunt Shirley to Glace Bay in the first place. Such pleasure he was getting out of the planning! How much he would have enjoyed the weekend. And how much we would have enjoyed sharing it with him. Many thanks to everyone on the Committee for this extraordinary event. While I was looking at your guest book, I saw that a descendant of the victims in the famous Brodey murder had sent a message from the US of A. What a history she has. That depth of that story has never been told and should be. My father, "Mayor Dan" or "Danny the Baker" MacDonald would have loved this site. My sister Gwen Satran wrote a note earlier. I am the son of Israel Mendelson and the nephew of Sammy, Daniel, Rae and Sarah. I lived in Glace Bay for a few years (mainly over the Mendelson grocery store on Sterling Road) when I was very young. I also visited many times after we left. I have many vivid memories of Glace Bay. When I visited one summer as a teenager someone (I still don’t know who) stopped me on the street, having recognized me as a Mendelson, and said "Glad to see you back, buy." Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the reunion, having already made other commitments for early August, but I do wish you all a great time and expect pictures and stories to be posted on this site. |

Scotia. My brother Michael and I lived with our mother, Zetta and father, Israel, in Glace Bay from the fall of 1951 to the spring of 1954. At that time we returned to Winnipeg. My uncles were Sammy and Daniel Mendelson of Mendelson's Grocery. Many of you may remember Michael and I when we were kids in the store on the Sterling. My three children were in Glace Bay for our cousin Glenna Mendelson's wedding to Michael Kay in July 1983. I would love to come to the reunion with my Aunty Rae Weinstein (Mendelson) of Boston, Mass, but will be in Israel (G-d willing), for the marriage of my oldest daughter, Cari.
